Munich S-Bahn

Munich Germany Tourist Information and Travel Guide

The commuter rail service in Munich Germany is called the S-Bahn (fast trains - Schnellbahn).  Although these trains normally travel at ground level, the S-Bahn lines do travel underground in the city centre.

S-Bahn stations in Munich are clearly marked with a white "S" on a green background.

If you arrive in Munich by plane, the S-Bahn provides a fast and inexpensive option to travel from the airport to the city centre.

From Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport, visitors can travel to downtown Munich via one of two S-Bahn lines: S1 and S8.  The trains travel along different routes but stop at the same stations in the heart of Munich (e.g. Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz).

Travel time from the airport to the city centre by S-Bahn is approximately 45 minutes.

For current information regarding S-Bahn routes, schedules, and fares, please visit the MVG Transit website.  Additional information about Munich's commuter train system is available on the DB S-Bahn website.
